Got to know this dude from accujazz radio. Everytime you get into the new school channel the only thing you are certain is that he's gonna be played sooner or latter. With plenty of reason.

Apparently it's something like indie meets jazz, and I'm sure it could fall in that description. I find it to be like fresh air in a genre that keeps on re-inventing itself, along the lines of E.S.T. or contemporary noise quintet. Maybe you won't agreed with me, but should try and give this dude a go anyway.

This album was hailed as a folk album worthy of being compared to records written by Joni Mitchell. Which is quite the thing to get all blushed and proud, if you happen to be Laura Marling. I guess. But only because I think Joni Mitchell is one of those singers time will never forget. Getting out of track here.
Anyway, folk album, amazing voice and some really nice songs. If you're into folk.
But don't take my word for it. Check it out for yourself.

Strangely enough, this is an album to get if you don't really like Pat Metheny's other stuff, in my view. More melodic and, with the addition of Bona on vocals, with sort of an uplifiting mood to it all. At a point it reminds me a bit of world music, probably because of Bona vocals, but it's still jazz we get here (for all you purists out there).

Well, after that crapy description, this might help out getting a feeling for the album.

King crimson - The Power to Believe

First things first...This post was inspired by the BIF comrade that's doing Albion from one end to the other.

Prog Rock has been going for some time now. It survived the 80's and the 90's, mainly by being unnoticed and has been picked up by some new bands now, which have taken it to a new level.

King Crimson isn't one of those. It is as old school as a band can really be (being around since 1969) and to be honest, if you go to wikipedia you'll get all the information you want. 'nough said abou the band, this album is a must have for the prog fan, or just for anyone that likes good music really. Hard to listen at first if you're not a Crimson fan, but give it a go anyway. One more thing. Don't expect rock from the 70's!

A couple of songs so you know what I'm talking about. The first song has a small intro of 40 secs. It's worth the waiting

James Carter - The real quiet storm

Jazz is a funny thing.
There's so many sides from where you can approach it, that it's confusing to give a straight answer when people ask you if you're into Jazz.
You see, you've got Free Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Bebop, Old Jazz, New Jazz, Fusion (which is a kind of Jazz thing), New York Jazz (I never got where this one classification came from), Bossa Nova (this is streching a bit but, you know, they called it brasilian Jazz, so it might as well be here), Diana Krall (just for the sake of argument) and it goes on and on and on.

All of this to say that Jazz ballads and Jazz musicians that play mostly Jazz ballads were never my thing (to the extent that I still don't like most of what Chet Baker played). That is until I listened this album. And in this album James Carter blows the hell out of everyone that just happened to be in front of the speaker.

Digitalism is a German dance punk duo founded in 2004 in Hamburg and consisting of Jens "Jence" Moelle and İsmail "Isi" Tüfekçi.

In 2007 this electro maestros , released Idealism, an album between rock and dance that every electro and rock lovers were waiting for.

Though songs range from killer dancefloor anthems like “Zdarlight” and “Idealistic” to more conventional indie vocal tracks like “Pogo” and “I Want I Want” and a reworking of the Cure’s “Fire in Cairo,” the album always maintains an organic cohesiveness.

This 2 boys give us a high-energy journey through faraway galaxies, foreign lands, other dimensions -- and eventually back to the dance floor. Here, they provide some insight into the concepts behind the album as well as their views on today’s indie-electro scene.

For the lucky ones who saw them at Dance Station- Lisbon 2007, they know what I am speaking about.

antony and the johnsons

I believe they dont need any presentations. However I was not sure if everyone already knew them. So here it goes:

Antony Hergarty gave voice to this project in 1998. Their first album was released in 2000 and in 2005 they won the mercury prize with "I am a bird now". In 2009 they released "The crying light".

2 weeks ago I went to see their concert and I have no words to described such a beautifull, penetrating, inspired I dont know what!! Just amazing. I also went to their concert in Lisbon when they present "I am a bird now "and I had exactly the same feeling.

It's impossible to describe such feelings. Just listen as loud as possible.

In my opinion, the jonhsons are wonderfull musicians and Antony is one of the best voices ever.

Since I am speaking about Antony I will just gave some names of some other projects he is in, that are also really amazing:

Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King is the seventh studio album by Dave Matthews Band (DMB), which is scheduled to be released by RCA Records on June 2, 2009.^[1]

It will be the band's first studio album since 2005's Stand Up and the first release since the death of saxophonist LeRoi Moore. Guitarist Tim Reynolds will play on the album, marking his first recording with DMB since 1998’s Before These Crowded Streets. Rashawn Ross will make his first appearance on a DMB studio album since joining as a regular touring member in 2006 as will Jeff Coffin, who has taken Moore's role since June 2008. The album is being produced by Rob Cavallo (the Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day, Alanis Morissette, My Chemical Romance).^[2]^[3] The first single on this album has been made available on their website.

The album will be the second major release by Dave Matthews Band with a vinyl edition.^[4] Before These Crowded Streets is the only other album to have been released on that medium.

Beauford described the word "GrooGrux" as not only a nickname for LeRoi Moore, but also a nickname for himself, Tim Reynolds, and former collaborator Tim Wicks. Beauford said the made-up word was used to describe the "vibe" and "energy" of their "wild-sounding rhythms" they made when they started playing music together. Beauford also mentioned that Matthews, bassist Stefan Lessard and violinist Boyd Tinsley were now graduates of "The GrooGrux Academy."^[12]

Matthews said the origins of "Big Whiskey" came from a chance encounter with a local New Orleans drunk during a photo shoot for the new album. When the band was shooting promotional photos outside of Preservation Hall in the French Quarter of New Orleans, they encountered a local man playing harmonica who was asking tourists for money so he could buy "a big whiskey." Lessard gave Matthews a $20 bill to hand the man, who walked off in celebration. Trumpet player Rashawn Ross then suggested the phrase for the title of the album, which Matthews liked because people wouldn't have to call the album by the more difficult to say "GrooGrux".^[13

Big Whiskey has been hailed by Rolling Stone as the group’s "heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally," which went on to note: "Throughout, Carter Beauford beats out elaborate, propulsive groves; bassist Stefan Lessard lays down Flea-style funk bass lines; violinist Boyd Tinsley plays cresting, intense runs; and Matthews mirrors Moore’s saxophone lines with scatlike singing." Billboard, in a cover story on Dave Matthews Band, praised Big Whiskey as "its best album yet… Highlights include the funk-rock rave-up 'Shake Me Like a Monkey,' the stirring ballad 'Lying in the Hands of God,' the swampy rocker 'Alligator Pie (Cockadile),' radio-friendly fare like 'Why I Am,' which features playful horns over a solid rock riff and a hooky chorus, and 'Funny the Way It Is,' which parlays a subtle intro into a soaring, syncopated anthem."

First of all let me introduce myself. I'm Rak and I'm from Azores.Some of you will probably question where is that? For those ones I'm just going to say: Its the most beautifull place in the world. :)

Os 2 Many Djs são constituídos por dois irmãos, David e Sephen Dewale, de Gwent, Bélgica. Juntos, são conhecidos como 2 Many Dj’s, mas juntamente com Stefaan Van Leuven, Steve Slingeneyer e Dave Martin, eles são também os Soulwax, responsáveis por muitas das misturas que se dançaram no likidus, de bandas como Gorillaz, Chemical Brothers, The Gossip, entre muitos outros. 2many djs é um projecto que faz as mais improváveis transições entre as mais improváveis faixas. Não será difícil juntar Bob Marley com Chemical Brothers. Na rádio soulwax (uma série de volumes de misturas lançados pelos 2 Many Dj's) utilizam-se muitos temas dos anos 80 e 90.

It's just amazing and creepy how can in a minute you are listening something like a valsa and in the next minute you passing to listen something dissonant that makes you want to cut the head of that friend that is beside you.
Between funk, heavy, super-mario game sounds, melodic chorus, rock, ska and crazy shits, you have a ten song brilliant/brutal/ genious album.

Oh and besides that, Mr. Bungle it's inspired on a clown...and you know how clowns are...creepy and terrifying murderers with powers to make children laugh.

Herbie Hancock - The Prisoner

Probably, the most overlooked recording from Herbie Hancock collection. People equate Hancock with funky beats and fusion pioneering, but this album shows a different side to the pianist, more a continuation of the "Speak Like a Child" album. The album concept is marked as a tribute to Martin Luther King and his plight for human rights, showing a more contemplative and melodic side of Hancock.
It also would mark the end of an era for Herbie Hancock (the last recording for blue note), as he went on to form the Mwandishi group after this.

Definitely a must have for any Hancock fan.

The theory says that to start to listen and understand Jazz, one should begin by the beginning (like everything else I suppose), meaning to pick those first jazz albuns from Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong and work your way to these days.

Well, that being said, this was the Jazz album that got me really into it, and it seems still a good introduction to the whole thing. Christian Mcbride (one of the new generation bass players that is most acclaimed and sought by) blends jazz with R&B, soul and funk in a cool way, while at the same time never lets us forget that it's still a Jazz record. Some of the last tracks might be a bit hard to digest, but they're a good way to step into the world of Free Jazz, so in this case, all good dids go unpunished

Mike Patton - Peeping Tom

Another project from Mrs Patton's strange reality. Far from the weird Mrs Bungle and Tomahawk days, it's actually a bit pop (well the category put forward was something like avant-garde trip hop/hip hop, wahtever that means). "I don't listen to the radio, but if I did, this is what I'd want it to sound like," Patton says of the project.

There's a bunch of people involved in the album, including Norah Jones and Massive Attack. Which is nice...
Still, it is a Mike Patton thing, meaning, Mike Patton's pop is not every person's pop. So, expect something really good...And strange.

Either heavy or light, drugs are certenaly involved and their costumes are hilarious. Still I am enjoying discovering the precursors of bands like Tool and Porcupine Tree.

Comprei este disco compacto e não me arrependi mesmo nada. Estes artistas são bem melhores do que artistas bem conhecidos em Portugal como Mikael Carreira, ou o próprio Toni. Fiquei satisfeito e recomendo para aqueles que ainda não conheçam.

I bought this compact disc and i didn't regreat it. These boys are far better than well known portuguese singers like Michael Carriers, or the Toni itself. I was pleased and recomend it for those who still don't know them.

TEN RE-DESIGN
Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, who served as the art director for the original Ten packaging, reprised his role for the reissues collaborating with designer, Andy Fischer, of Cameron Crowe’s Vinyl Films (Into the Wild soundtrack LP, Vanilla Sky soundtrack LP, Harold and Maude anniversary edition soundtrack LP).

"The goal was to assemble the ultimate fan-piece,” explains Fischer. “Something Pearl Jam lovers could pore over as they experience an indelible record all over again, in an entirely new way."

“The original concept was about really being together as a group and entering into the world of music as a true band...a sort of all-for-one deal,” says Jeff Ament. “There were some elements of the original Ten artwork that didn't turn out the way we had hoped, due to time constraints. With this reissue, we’ve been able to take our time and invest resources into making the design the way we had originally intended.”

REPLICA OF PEARL JAM 3-SONG DEMO CASSETTE IN SUPER DELUXE EDITION
In the process of digging through his archives for this project, Ament came across an old cassette marked “Momma-Son” – the fabled original Pearl Jam demo tape featuring the first recorded versions of “Alive,” “Once” and “Footsteps.” Ament and guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready had recorded instrumental tracks of these songs to help solicit a singer for their newly formed band. Mutual friend - and then Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer - Jack Irons suggested they send the tape down to San Diego surfer and little-known singer Eddie Vedder.

Completely inspired by what he heard from these musicians that he then only knew by name, Vedder quickly wrote lyrics, put these vocals to the music tracks and shipped the tape back to Seattle. Upon hearing how Vedder had transformed the songs, Ament, Gossard and McCready asked him to come up to Seattle so they could meet and have an official “tryout” together. Shortly thereafter, Pearl Jam was born. (A replica of the “Momma-Son” cassette will be included in the Super Deluxe Edition of Ten.)

Jeff Ament describes the experience of re-visiting that tape with singer Eddie Vedder:
“I think the first time that Ed or I had opened any of those boxes was a few weeks ago. I knew that the original ‘Momma-Son’ cassette was somewhere, but I hadn’t listened to it in 17, 18, 19 years. It was cool to sit down and play it for the first time with Ed and see his reaction. And to find that 90% of it stayed exactly the same as what ended up on the record. A lot of elements were identical. There was some energy flying around at that point even from 1,300 miles away from Seattle to San Diego.”

DevilDriver is a groove metal band from Santa Barbara, California. Coal Chamber vocalist Dez Fafara was not happy with the direction Coal Chamber was going in musically, and met musicians who had a similar music interest at a barbecue and bar. Fafara, guitarists Evan Pitts and Jeff Kendrick, bassist Jon Miller, and then-guitarist John Boecklin formed Deathride. Due to copyright issues and the name being taken by several bands, Deathride changed its name to DevilDriver, which refers to bells Italian witches used to drive evil forces away.

Temple Of The Dog - "Temple was a labor of love, a tribute to a dead friend, an outgrowth of the mourning process."

Definitely one of the cd's that is in my top 10. In Temple you can find a deeply farewell of a dear friend (Andrew Wood) and everything what that holds in sentimental terms, mixed, for besides, with the strength of two bands making music together- Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. And the result it´s just a 55min. piece of heaven.

Tom Waits - Blue Valentine

To listen to Tom Waits is enter in a strange place. There's no middle term, you either love him or hate him (specially after he went into the weird world of experimentation during the Island years). His low growl voice has been the origin of myths and strange legends that no one would like to see crushed, and his notion of how a musician/artist should deal with what he's producing and distributing predecesses the likes of Pearl Jam and Neil Young.

Me, I'm a massive fan of his work in the 70's, while he was signed to the Asylum records. In that moment in space and time, his songs defined for me what a blues singer should sound like: Some dude drunk on bad bourbon, singing about hookers and bitter lifes, in a shitty corner of some little joint smelling of cigarrettes and bad beer. That's what one could expect in this "Blue Valentine". It starts a bit slowly, but after the song "Romeo is bleeding", you're in for the ride. Or, you have though twice and switched to Nina Simone. One of them both...

Beirut is the band of 22-year-old Santa Fe native Zach Condon.

French prog rock band. Saw them live last tuesday, in an amazing gig, and they just blew me right of my feet. So, it's prog. Along the likes of Porcupine tree, Riverside or the first album of Amplifier. Kind of. Anyway, the album is excellent.

There is not much one could say about Jeff Buckley or Grace that hasn't already been writen down or said. And since I don't think anyone can really can put this album into words, I'll just say this: Listen to it. It's the voice of one of the last true songwriters. I imagine that he will rise as some kind of Bob Dylan to this generation of ours (if he isn't that already...)

I haven't really figured out how to contribute to this blog properly.

I've been wandering around different styles of music, but no artist is really that significant that i would definitely want to share with you all. One reason for this is that i enjoy listening to random music in last.fm while at work and not always i have the chance to see who's the musician behind it.

Anyway, i've came across this Johnny Cash 2003 video of a Nine Inch Nails cover, that really means a lot to me.

I apreciate when an individual is so aware of it's life that can admit it's own faults and feel in peace with himself. Even legends like Johnny Cash and Ray Charles are common men with common personal dilemas.

Fightstar are a four-piece post-hardcore band from London, England. Formed in late 2003, Fightstar have since recorded and released three full length LPs, They Liked You Better When You Were Dead, Grand Unification and One Day Son, This Will All Be Yours.

This band reminds me of Peecock (worldwide hit cult band of Faro) and if it´s musicians were actually good, this might have been a similar result.
