Blur - No Distance Left To Run

Blur - No Distance Left To Run

Im excited to check out their reunion doc, No Distance Left to Run, even if the trailer didn’t look fucking great. But it does! There are awesomely dramatic quotes (Graham Coxon: “The idea of bumping into any of them was terrifying”), gorgeous live shots (most notably, Albarn leaping off a big-ass stage barrier and the gang walking backstage in Reservoir Dogs–style slo-mo), and loads of hugs. It’s out in January. Also, there’s a new Gorillaz album to look forward to, which features Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack, Barry Gibb, and Mos Def.

Florence and the machine - Lungs

I love this album. Florence and the machine are an indie band. Or a indie singer, I haven't really figure that one out. Anyway it's something of an indie album, but so much more. Kinda hard to put in words.
So....I think it's better for you to see it for yourself and get your own idea of what it could....

Pat Metheny Group - Speaking of Now

Strangely enough, this is an album to get if you don't really like Pat Metheny's other stuff, in my view. More melodic and, with the addition of Bona on vocals, with sort of an uplifiting mood to it all. At a point it reminds me a bit of world music, probably because of Bona vocals, but it's still jazz we get here (for all you purists out there).

Well, after that crapy description, this might help out getting a feeling for the album.

Lamb Of God - Wrath

To everyone who misses a taste of Pantera...

Wrath is the sixth studio album by American heavy metal band Lamb of God. It was released on February 23, 2009. It achieved #2 on Billboard 200, with sales exceeding 68,000 in its first week.[1][2] As of September it has sold around 230,000 copies.

Holland Tunnel Project - A smooth blend of jazz

Jazz with a beat. And swing. Kinda non descriptive, but soooooo good.

At first it sounds a bit like lounge. Listen to it more than a couple of times and you start to notice that it's a bit more than that.

Porcupine Tree - The Incident

Incoming another fucking awesome Porcupine Tree album, on 14th of September.
Mininova already got it in their archives...ups :p!!
Can´t wait to see them on November 20 - Almada

Ephrat - No One's Words

Eprhat: Omar Ephrat: guitars, flute, keyboards
Lior Seker: vocals
Gili Rosenberg: bass
Tomer Z: drums

EPHRAT are a fairly young band in the world of heavy progressive music.
"Omar EPHRAT is very much aware of his Israeli band's heritage and is not afraid to use it. He acknowledges that the country is a mixture of European and Middle Eastern, old and new traditions, and this works its way into the band's music. Heavy metal riffage mingles freely with Eastern synth passages, and medieval acoustics stand toe-to-toe with techno beats. This eclectic nature is molded into a sound that reflects some of EPHRAT's favorite bands: classic progressive outfits like KING CRIMSON, JETHRO TULL and ELP; and more modern, heavier influences like PORCUPINE TREE, SOUNDGARDEN and Alanis MORISSETTE. All in all, EPHRAT is a diverse band that should appeal to anyone who likes their prog with a heavier bent."
Once more, Steven Wilson (PT), is responsable for giving light to this great project.

Enjoy

Hocus Pocus

"I don't like hip hop and it pisses me out"... fine, but, do you really really really now hip hop, isn't it like saying I don't like jazz?! I give you Hocus Pocus from France, a taste of fresh hip hop that proves hip hop isn't just about skanky bums, bitch slaps and bling bling!!! If you dig this let me know, 'cause there's more KickAss Music!

The Bad Plus - Suspicious Activity

It's not Jazz, but it's free. You'll have to listen to it to understand what I mean. Plus, this album has the funkiest version of the "theme song of the chariots of fire" ever made.

King crimson - The Power to Believe

First things first...This post was inspired by the BIF comrade that's doing Albion from one end to the other.

Prog Rock has been going for some time now. It survived the 80's and the 90's, mainly by being unnoticed and has been picked up by some new bands now, which have taken it to a new level.

King Crimson isn't one of those. It is as old school as a band can really be (being around since 1969) and to be honest, if you go to wikipedia you'll get all the information you want. 'nough said abou the band, this album is a must have for the prog fan, or just for anyone that likes good music really. Hard to listen at first if you're not a Crimson fan, but give it a go anyway. One more thing. Don't expect rock from the 70's!

A couple of songs so you know what I'm talking about. The first song has a small intro of 40 secs. It's worth the waiting

KTU - Quiver

KTU -Kimmo Pohjonen - accordion, voice
Trey Gunn - Warr guitar
Pat Mastelotto - beats, noises, rhythmic devices

"Sometimes warrior sometimes mystical, between fire and ice, in an unending horse-ride through the planes of northern Europe. Convulsive, ghostly music, capable of releasing gargula from its concrete skin - scaring, slow waltzes, improvised gothic jazz, rehearsed available funk, muscular and overwhelming."

Kronos Quartet - "Floodplain"

"Kronos' new album Floodplain features music inspired by the idea that areas prone to devastating flooding will experience creative rebirth after a catastrophe."

"For more than 30 years, the Kronos Quartet has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to expanding the range and context of the string quartet. In the process, Kronos has become one of the most celebrated and influential groups of our time, performing thousands of concerts worldwide, releasing more than 40 recordings of extraordinary breadth and creativity, collaborating with many of the world's most eclectic composers and performers, and commissioning hundreds of works and arrangements for string quartet. Kronos' work has also garnered numerous awards, including a Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance (2004) and "Musicians of the Year" (2003) from Musical America.
In addition to composers, Kronos counts numerous artists from around the world among its collaborators, including the Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man; legendary Bollywood "playback singer" Asha Bhosle, featured on Kronos' Grammy-nominated CD, You’ve Stolen My Heart: Songs from R.D. Burman's Bollywood; Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq; Mexican rockers Café Tacuba; genre defying sound artist and instrument builder Walter Kitundu; the Romanian gypsy band Taraf de Haïdouks; renowned American soprano Dawn Upshaw; and the unbridled British cabaret trio, the Tiger Lillies. Kronos has performed live with the likes of icons Allen Ginsberg, Zakir Hussain, Modern Jazz Quartet, Tom Waits, David Barsamian, Howard Zinn, Betty Carter, and David Bowie, and has appeared on recordings by such diverse talents as Nine Inch Nails, Amon Tobin, Dan Zanes, DJ Spooky, Dave Matthews, Nelly Furtado, Rokia Traoré, Joan Armatrading and Don Walser."

James Carter - The real quiet storm

Jazz is a funny thing.
There's so many sides from where you can approach it, that it's confusing to give a straight answer when people ask you if you're into Jazz.
You see, you've got Free Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Bebop, Old Jazz, New Jazz, Fusion (which is a kind of Jazz thing), New York Jazz (I never got where this one classification came from), Bossa Nova (this is streching a bit but, you know, they called it brasilian Jazz, so it might as well be here), Diana Krall (just for the sake of argument) and it goes on and on and on.

All of this to say that Jazz ballads and Jazz musicians that play mostly Jazz ballads were never my thing (to the extent that I still don't like most of what Chet Baker played). That is until I listened this album. And in this album James Carter blows the hell out of everyone that just happened to be in front of the speaker.

Also check out his "Layin' in the cut" album.

Monstro Mau

Well, this is my first post here. I've been considering for long what would it be... and today I found this: Monstro Mau, a band from Braga, with a good sound. Just to say that one of the members was from Feed (bassist) and the rest from Big Fat Mamma.

Digitalism

Digitalism is a German dance punk duo founded in 2004 in Hamburg and consisting of Jens "Jence" Moelle and İsmail "Isi" Tüfekçi.

In 2007  this electro maestros , released  Idealism,  an album  between rock and dance that every electro and rock lovers  were waiting for.

Though songs range from killer dancefloor anthems like “Zdarlight” and “Idealistic” to more conventional indie vocal tracks like “Pogo” and “I Want I Want” and a reworking of the Cure’s “Fire in Cairo,” the album always maintains an organic cohesiveness.

This 2 boys give us a high-energy journey through faraway galaxies, foreign lands, other dimensions -- and eventually back to the dance floor. Here, they provide some insight into the concepts behind the album as well as their views on today’s indie-electro scene.

For the lucky ones who saw them at Dance Station- Lisbon 2007, they know what I am speaking about.

antony and the johnsons

I believe they dont need any presentations. However I was not sure if everyone already knew them. So here it goes:

Antony Hergarty gave voice to this project in 1998. Their first album was released in 2000 and in 2005 they won the mercury prize with "I am a bird now". In 2009 they released "The crying light".

2 weeks ago I went to see their concert and I have no words to described such a beautifull, penetrating, inspired I dont know what!! Just amazing. I also went to their concert in Lisbon when they present "I am a bird now "and I had exactly the same feeling.
It's impossible to describe such feelings. Just listen as loud as possible.

In my opinion, the jonhsons are wonderfull musicians and Antony is one of the best voices ever.

Since I am speaking about Antony I will just gave some names of some other projects he is in, that are also really amazing:

- Coco rosie
- Hercules and love affair

Enjoy

Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King is the seventh studio album by Dave Matthews Band (DMB), which is scheduled to be released by RCA Records on June 2, 2009.[1]

It will be the band's first studio album since 2005's Stand Up and the first release since the death of saxophonist LeRoi Moore. Guitarist Tim Reynolds will play on the album, marking his first recording with DMB since 1998’s Before These Crowded Streets. Rashawn Ross will make his first appearance on a DMB studio album since joining as a regular touring member in 2006 as will Jeff Coffin, who has taken Moore's role since June 2008. The album is being produced by Rob Cavallo (the Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day, Alanis Morissette, My Chemical Romance).[2][3] The first single on this album has been made available on their website.

The album will be the second major release by Dave Matthews Band with a vinyl edition.[4] Before These Crowded Streets is the only other album to have been released on that medium.

Beauford described the word "GrooGrux" as not only a nickname for LeRoi Moore, but also a nickname for himself, Tim Reynolds, and former collaborator Tim Wicks. Beauford said the made-up word was used to describe the "vibe" and "energy" of their "wild-sounding rhythms" they made when they started playing music together. Beauford also mentioned that Matthews, bassist Stefan Lessard and violinist Boyd Tinsley were now graduates of "The GrooGrux Academy."[12]

Matthews said the origins of "Big Whiskey" came from a chance encounter with a local New Orleans drunk during a photo shoot for the new album. When the band was shooting promotional photos outside of Preservation Hall in the French Quarter of New Orleans, they encountered a local man playing harmonica who was asking tourists for money so he could buy "a big whiskey." Lessard gave Matthews a $20 bill to hand the man, who walked off in celebration. Trumpet player Rashawn Ross then suggested the phrase for the title of the album, which Matthews liked because people wouldn't have to call the album by the more difficult to say "GrooGrux".[13

Big Whiskey has been hailed by Rolling Stone as the group’s "heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally," which went on to note: "Throughout, Carter Beauford beats out elaborate, propulsive groves; bassist Stefan Lessard lays down Flea-style funk bass lines; violinist Boyd Tinsley plays cresting, intense runs; and Matthews mirrors Moore’s saxophone lines with scatlike singing." Billboard, in a cover story on Dave Matthews Band, praised Big Whiskey as "its best album yet… Highlights include the funk-rock rave-up 'Shake Me Like a Monkey,' the stirring ballad 'Lying in the Hands of God,' the swampy rocker 'Alligator Pie (Cockadile),' radio-friendly fare like 'Why I Am,' which features playful horns over a solid rock riff and a hooky chorus, and 'Funny the Way It Is,' which parlays a subtle intro into a soaring, syncopated anthem."

2 Many Dj's in Faro, SA 16.05.2009

2 Many DJs are made up of two brothers, David and Stephen Dewaele, from Gwent, Belgium. Together, they are known as 2 Many DJ's, but together with Stefaan Van Leuven, Steve Slingeneyer and Dave Martijn, they also make up 'Soulwax'.

Fat Freddy's Drop

Deliciosa e hipnótica a vibração. Os concertos desta malta então... como alguém diria: em três palavras Im Pre Sionante! São nestes dias a minha manhã a minha noite and everything in between.

Either/Or - Elliot Smith

Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and resided for a significant portion of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained popularity. His primary instrument was the guitar, but he was also proficient at piano, clarinet, bass, drums and harmonica. Smith had a distinctive vocal style characterized by his "whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery" and use of multi-tracking to create vocal layers, textures, and harmonies.
(...)
Elliott Smith died on October 21, 2003 at age 34 from two stab wounds to the chest. According to girlfriend Jennifer Chiba, with whom he was living at the time, the two were arguing, and she locked herself in the bathroom to take a shower. Chiba heard him scream, and upon opening the door, saw Smith standing with a kitchen knife in his chest. She pulled the knife out, after which he collapsed and she called 991. Smith died in the hospital with the time of death listed as 1:36 p.m.

Foge Foge Bandido

A concept album done by one of the most significant voices of Portugal.. a gathering of ideas melting in a fusion of an electro Tom Waits and of course Manel Cruz.. give out some good memories of Ornatos Violeta.

You can listen to it in: http://www.fogefogebandido.com/

O Amor Dá-me Tesão/Não Fui Eu que Estraguei é o álbum de estreia de Foge Foge Bandido, lançado em 2008. Zoe Keating - One cello x 16: Natoma

I think they call this avant gard, but to be honest I really don't know. Zoe Keating is a cello player that on this project (one girl project) adds layers of cello (something like 16 cello phrasings one on top of each other plus sampling) to create a (likes she puts it) dense musical atmosphere. Something like that.

Warning: Don't expect something like apocalitica

Gogol Bordello - Super Taranta!

Gogol Bordello is a multi-ethnic Gypsy punk band from the Lower East Side of New York City that formed in 1999 and is known for its theatrical stage shows. Much of the band's sound is inspired by Gypsy music, as its core members are immigrants from Eastern Europe. The band incorporates minor-key accordion and fiddle (and on some albums, saxophone) mixed with cabaret, punk, and dub as well as multiple languages. Phill Jupitus has once described the band as "a bit like The Clash and The Pogues having a fight... in Eastern Europe,"[1] while Kenneth Partridge of The Hartford Courant described lead singer Eugene Hütz's voice as "somewhere between that of Borat and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog"

Mr. Bungle

You just simply pick the concept that's beyond free-jazz and adapt to something more heavy. the result? Mr. Bungle.
It's just amazing and creepy how can in a minute you are listening something like a valsa and in the next minute you passing to listen something dissonant that makes you want to cut the head of that friend that is beside you.
Between funk, heavy, super-mario game sounds, melodic chorus, rock, ska and crazy shits, you have a ten song brilliant/brutal/ genious album.

Oh and besides that, Mr. Bungle it's inspired on a clown...and you know how clowns are...creepy and terrifying murderers with powers to make children laugh.

Enjoy!!

Herbie Hancock - The Prisoner

Probably, the most overlooked recording from Herbie Hancock collection. People equate Hancock with funky beats and fusion pioneering, but this album shows a different side to the pianist, more a continuation of the "Speak Like a Child" album. The album concept is marked as a tribute to Martin Luther King and his plight for human rights, showing a more contemplative and melodic side of Hancock.
It also would mark the end of an era for Herbie Hancock (the last recording for blue note), as he went on to form the Mwandishi group after this.

Definitely a must have for any Hancock fan.

The fusion between balcan, gypsy, afro-beat, ska and arabic music styles it's what we can ear from Kumpania.
It's the best portuguese album of the 2008 without any doubt.
